How it Works

Concrete edging around new house in Cedar Rapids
1

Prepare the area

After a visual inspection of the area where we’ll be working on, we make sure the surface is even and level. Then we start designing the path for which the curb machine will follow.

2

Prepare the mix

First we mix in the cement and your choice of color, precisely weighted to ensure consistency in color and a crack resistant curb.

3

Create the curbs

The mix is placed on a wheelbarrow and the machine is placed at the starting point of the path. The mix is shoveled into the machine and extruded into your shape of choice to form each curb.

4

Finishing

We hand trowel or brush the curbs to give finishing touches and cut control joints. We also stamp the pattern of your choice on this step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during installation?

Most installations will be done in a day. We will mix the concrete on our specialized trailer and transfer it with a wheelbarrow that has large turf tires, which shouldn’t tear up your grass. We will trench the area where the curbing will go. Outside of that, your grass and landscape will be unaffected. There may be small remnants of concrete left behind that will dissipate over time or easily be cleaned up after the concrete dries. We are not responsible for sprinkler heads and will need them to be flagged or moved before curbing can be done over them.

Essential Edging is not a landscaper and is not responsible for removing existing edging, filling in mulch or rock, and reseeding grass. We are happy to refer you to a landscaper if you do not have a preferred one.

What can I expect after installation?

Keep pets, children and objects away from the curb for at least 24 hours. The concrete will take multiple days to cure and although it will be “hard” to the touch, it can still be damaged during the curing process.

Your custom curbing will look great for the lifetime of your home with proper care. The sealer will break down over time and will need to be reapplied approximately every two years to retain a vibrant color. We would be happy to do this for you for a small charge or you can apply a high gloss acrylic sealer yourself.

When the installation is complete we will walk the job with you and collect payment. If there is damage done after our team has completed the job and left the site, there will be a minimum return visit charge of $200 for the repair. Larger repairs will be billed accordingly, based on time and materials.

Any damage that is done to curbing after we leave (footprints, etc.) is not our responsibility, there will be a minimum $200 charge to come back.

What is the warranty?

Your custom curbing has a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. It will be replaced at no charge if the materials we use or the way it was installed by our crew causes the defect.

Will the concrete crack?

Concrete will always crack and is attributed to materials, layout, and temperature. We will mix the concrete and locate joints appropriately to prevent and manage expected cracks. Any crack on level ground over ¼” wide is due to operator error and would be covered under warranty. Spider cracks occur in all types of concrete and will not be repaired because the repair will look less appealing than the crack. If a control joint cracks, it is doing its job of relieving stress.

Do you reinforce your curbing?

Rebar is not practical in this application. Some companies run cabling to help with separation. We choose to use blended polymers which increase the tensile and compression strength.

Why don’t you recommend straight lines?

This was hard for us at first, too. After seeing it in practice, smooth flowing lines are the best compliment to your house and landscaping. Straight lines are incredibly difficult to install and are more difficult to mow. Flowing lines draw the eye, improve drainage, and help accentuate the character of your landscape.

When is the ideal time to install curbing?

We prefer to install after the initial groundwork has been completed and before sod or mulch/rocks are laid down. Sprinkler systems should be installed after the curbing to ensure the efficacy of the sprinkler system. We can install curbing on with mature landscaping, but there will be a trench between the grass, curbing, and mulch/rocks.

Why do you cut drains in the curbing around a house?

Drains are cut into the curbing to ensure water can release from the landscaping instead of pooling up and potentially flooding your house. These drains are not a replacement for downspouts. Downspouts will need to be extended over the top of the curb.

What is the minimum footage or cost for a job? Tree rings?

Due to the cost of running a curbing crew, we have a minimum of $500 per job. Tree rings have a $250 minimum, which gives you a six-foot diameter.

Our curbing got damaged. Can you fix it?

If your curb is damaged or run over by a heavy vehicle we can certainly repair it. We would most likely replace the entire section of curbing that is affected to make sure it is cohesive. There is a $200 minimum for any curbing repair.

Do you charge sales tax?

There is sales tax on all jobs except for those on new construction and for non-profit businesses.

Do you provide service where I live?

Our primary service area is Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty, but we will happily service Cedar Rapids and other surrounding towns.
